Abstract
Empathy can be defined as an individual's ability to recognize feelings or emotions that are being experienced by others. Hoffman (1982, 2000), Eisenberg, et al., (1986, 1987) and Batson (2008) agree that empathy can lead to prosocial behaviors because empathetic engagement can motivate a person to help others who are suffering. According to Hoffman and Eisenberg, empathy is described as part of an individual's development relating to his or her cognitive development. However, to develop a person's empathy to its fullest potential, other factors such as parenting styles, family support, learning and teaching styles, and direct experience relating to empathy, need to be considered.
