Abstract
Nowadays, traceability is recognized as an important task of food industry to givecustomers confidence in the products they buy for home consumption. Furthermore,in terms of food safety, exporting food products to the EU and developed countriessuch as Japan, Australia and U.S.A., all have specific requirements. In addition,Thailand’s General Food Law came into force in 2009, just like the EU’s, and makestraceability compulsory for all food and feed businesses. It requires that all food andfeed operators implement special traceability systems. They must be able to identifywhere their products have come from and where they are going to, and to rapidlyprovide this information to competent authorities in case a problem is found with theirproducts. The purpose of this article is to propose the concept and process of theGS1 Global traceability Standard for the food industry through a case study in theThai beef industry. This study will allow the readers to understand and realize thebasic steps to establish a traceability system for their business following the GS1global traceability standard.
